It's fascinating to watch a tiny herb sprout, especially when it grows in a simple Mason jar on your windowsill. Whether you're passionate about fresh basil, mint, or other easy-to-grow herbs, or you simply want to add a touch of greenery to your kitchen, the Hydroponic Grow Kit with its 1000ml Mason Jar is a simple, attractive, and sustainable way to bring a little bit of nature into your everyday life.
Here's how to do it:
What a complete kit should contain (and what you should have on hand)
In your kit, you will find:
- 1× Hydroponic growing medium, it fits perfectly in the included pot and round basket
- 1 x 1000ml glass Mason jar (lid included, if desired)
- 1 x 5cm round basket
- 1× 3.8cm round rock wool
You should also have this at home:
- A little lukewarm water
- A well-lit spot, but sheltered from direct and intense sunlight
- A rock wool substrate

Step 1: Insert the rock wool
Insert your rock wool disc into the round basket.

Step 2: Add the water
Add lukewarm water to the 1000 ml Mason jar. The water should reach halfway up the height of the rockwool substrate.

Step 3: Soak the substrate
Wait 30 minutes for the substrate to become thoroughly soaked with water and slightly less firm.
Step 4: Add the seeds
Gently add the seeds to the middle of the substrate at a depth of at least 5 mm.

Step 5: Germination Phase
Avoid direct sunlight until the first shoots appear. A dark, warm, and draft-free location is ideal during this phase.
Step 6: Monitor hydration
Check once a day that the substrate is not drying out by adding water as needed up to the first leaves (cotyledon).
Step 7: Add the nutrient solution
To help your plants get off to a good start, you can add a mild nutrient solution to the water, either 1 to 2 ml per 1000 ml mason jar. Refer to the label on your nutrient solution container.

Step 8: Final Placement
Place your seedling in a well-lit area, ideally near a window, but out of direct sunlight to prevent it from overheating, especially during the warmer months. It will thrive in a room temperature between 18°C and 24°C. Natural light will help it grow well, provided it is not overexposed. To encourage balanced growth, remember to rotate the pot every two days.
Easy care
- Check the water level in the Mason jar and add water as needed. When there are roots longer than 2 cm, the water level should be 1 cm from the top of the basket.
- As a general rule, add a nutrient solution to the water once every 15 days.
- Once every 30 days, completely empty the container, clean it with water, then refill it with water and add a new dose of nutrient solution.
- If your plant's roots are growing too much in the Mason container, it is perfectly possible to gather them together by forming a knot.
- If you need to clean the stand, hand washing with warm water and mild soap is recommended.
To preserve its shape and effectiveness, the hydroponic growing medium should not be put in the dishwasher.
