There's something magical about watching a little sprout emerge—especially when it comes from a simple Mason jar on your windowsill. Whether you're a fan of fresh green onions, easy-to-grow sprouts, or just a touch of green in your kitchen, a sprouting kit in a 250ml Mason jar is a simple, pretty, and sustainable way to add a little life to your everyday.
Here's how to do it:
What your kit contains (and what you should have on hand)
In your kit, you will usually find:
- 1× reusable regrowth support
- 1 x 250ml glass Mason jar
You should also have this at home:
- A little lukewarm water
- A bright spot (but not in direct, scorching sunlight)
Step 1: Insert the bulb or shoot
Insert a bulb or shoot deep into one of the four slots of the reusable regrowth support, so that it is stable and ready to regrow.
Step 2: Add the water
Add warm water to the 250 ml Mason jar. The water should reach the same level as the inside of the rectangle suggested in fluorescent green.
Only the roots should be immersed in water; the bulb should remain dry to avoid any risk of rotting.
Step 3: Assemble the kit
Insert the reusable holder into the Mason container and then tighten the screw band.
Step 4: Find the right location
Find the right spot, near a bright window, but out of direct sunlight all day (especially in summer) and at room temperature, between 18°C and 24°C. Natural light is your best friend, but avoid "cooking" your seedlings with too much heat. You can even rotate your pot every two days to help the plant grow straight.
Easy care
- The water should be changed every two days at most. This will allow, for example, the gelatinous glycerin in the green onion to be removed.
- Check the water level in the Mason container and add water as needed.
- For an extended period, it would be wise to add nutrients to the water.
- If you need to clean the stand, hand washing with warm water and mild soap is recommended.
To preserve its shape and effectiveness, the regrowth support is not dishwasher safe.
